Therapist: Craig
Vassie, Chiltern Aromatherapy Client:
Mary C,
a 25 year old department manager in a busy High Wycombe office. Since
puberty, Mary has had irregular menstrual periods that are preceded by
severe abdominal cramps, some breast pain, and general irritability. Once
menstruation has started, blood loss is heavy and uncomfortable, and Mary is
often forced to take time off work. She was prescribed the contraceptive
pill by her GP at age 16, and although it regulates the cycle, she advises
that it does nothing for the discomfort.
Assessment: Mary had
been experiencing premenstrual cramps for the last 24 hours. She appears
slightly bloated, with a tender lower abdomen, painfully swollen breasts,
and tender inguinal lymph nodes. Mary says that she has been "crabby" with
everyone at work today.
Treatment: We
prepared a 2% dilution of German Chamomile (matricaria chamomilla),
Cypress (cupressus sempervirens) and Marjoram (origanum marjorana)
essential oils, diluted in plain Sweet Almond Oil, and used this blend for a
relaxing full body massage.
We also gave Mary a 30ml
bottle of the same blend for home use, with instructions to rub the mix into
her lower abdomen if she felt the need.
We repeated the treatment
every month for four months, changing the oils to avoid possible
sensitisation. Mary now obtains a blend from us, and treats herself at home,
with occasional massages at our clinic "as a treat".
